The Mild hybrid (MHEV)
Internal combustion engine(diesel or petrol) assisted by electric power with a conventional manual gearbox. It has Electric assistance from an electric motor/generator which takes the place of starter motor and alternator, this can assist the internal combustion engine to fill in torque at low road speed and to provide a power boost for overtaking. When not required to boost the performance the motor/generator charges a 24-volt battery ready for when electric power is needed. It cannot drive on Electric alone.
This is a good introduction to hybrid, as it does not require any change in driving style or driving habits and does not require a wall box as the car does not require any external charging.
The Hybrid. ( HEV)
Plug-in hybrid. (PHEV)
This has two sources of power by the engine and electric battery. Having a larger battery allows you to drive further on electric power. With a plug-in hybrid you get the best of both worlds.
All Electric.
Self-charging Hybrid
It is powered by a normal engine however the electric motor takes over for shorter distances. This is a great option for those who do small journeys around town.
Only available with CVT or Automatic transmission-as the car chooses whether to run on internal combustion, electric or combined.
The battery is charged by regenerative braking and by the motor/generator. The electric motor can assist the internal combustion engine when needed As well as the advantages of having better fuel efficiency, if you own a Hybrid you gain extra benefits such as having a lower first year road tax.
Does not a wall box or any external charging facility.
